Funding for R&D

Last year, the Flemish theme channel MENT TV contacted Venture Campus for the necessary guidance in developing their subsidy application. The innovative idea was already developed, but it proved to be a major challenge to communicate it to Vlaio in an efficient and targeted manner. With the help of Venture Campus, MENT TV was awarded a grant, enabling them to further develop their innovative idea.

Challenges for radio broadcasters in 2020

Today, there are several global challenges for radio broadcasters. Streaming services and podcasts are becoming increasingly popular, which means that radio could be lost in the sea of listening options. Podcasts and audio content can be listened to on any device, making it an important factor in the need for further development of digital radio. In addition, the market increasingly demands high-quality original content in less time and on more different platforms . This increasing complexity makes it necessary to automate repetitive tasks and increase efficiency.

One of the biggest threats to radio is short-sightedness in the industry. It is still holding on for further development of the classic radio model. However, it is necessary to introduce podcasts and smart technologies if one wants to give radio another chance. In addition, the focus should not only be placed on the aging listener, but a balance must be created so that both the older and younger generations want to continue using radio .

Video will only get more powerful in the coming years thanks to the ease of editing and all the advanced technologies available on the market. The power of video promotion must be extended to the radio medium so that profitability is enhanced .

In addition, various radio formats are increasingly experiencing difficulties with FM, but are not specialized enough to have a chance through digital platforms. It is more important than ever to specialize as a niche radio station and to maintain a clear theme, in order to continue to add value for the listener.

Venture Campus also supported with the innovative aspects

The founders of Ment, Marc Hallez and Magali Sibille, bought a building in Mariakerke 10 years ago in order to design the studios for the commercial channel. The broadcasts were always done in a classic manner by a technician who often integrated pre-recorded images. “For us, however, it goes further than broadcasting music with live images from the radio studio. We want to give the viewer a total experience, where we move away from this idea as fiercely as possible.” Says Marc Hallez.

With its innovative idea, MENT TV 2.0, MENT is looking for the perfect integration between radio and television. A TV viewer experiences 100% television, a radio listener experiences radio 100%. With MENT TV 2.0 the viewer receives 100% radio with 100% television – visual radio. To achieve this, they have outlined four pillars that they must adhere to: 100% visual radio, Online radio audio, Online content via video-on-demand and a direct link to social media platforms so that the content can be shared.

The new MENT TV 2.0 platform must be able to work with 1 operator (the presenter) during the broadcast time. This presenter can control all media with one finger. Imaging and live capture always blend nicely and the cameras also switch automatically. That is unique in the market and allows MENT TV to run shows that would be too expensive in the classic model to be profitable for RADIO / TV stations of this size.

The added value of Venture Campus

An innovative development of this capacity entails a high price tag. Marc Hallez quickly realized this: “After an initial contact with Vlaio, where we discussed our options for obtaining subsidies, it soon became clear that it would be quite a challenge to capture our idea in one file.” He immediately contacted Venture Campus. “During our first meeting, we discussed all aspects of our innovative idea and the necessary budget. What immediately gave me a good impression was the fact that Venture Campus went very deeply into the matter and also gave suggestions to make the project even stronger. It is clear that they are passionate about Innovation & Development and they have a lot of knowledge about the subject.”

After several discussions, the case was completed and submitted. Successfully! “Venture Campus clearly believed in our idea and that gave me a lot of confidence. In the meantime, we are rolling out the project. Venture Campus therefore helps us with the design of our interim reports, so that we do not overlook necessary information,”says Marc Hallez.
